Market Definition
Anaerobic digestion (AD), a microbial fermentation process that produces biogas, is an efficient way to turn a variety of waste streams into sources of heat and electrical energy. The anaerobic digester, which may function as a full-fledged power plant when coupled with a turbine or gas engine, is at the core of the technology. Landfills for solid waste also produce a biological gas that can be recovered using natural AD. The procedure can result in the production of significant amounts of gaseous fuel methane as well as a useful by-product in the form of fertilizer.
Market Insights
The anaerobic digestion of agricultural crops, byproducts, and manure accounts for 75% of the world’s biogas potential; the recovery of gas from municipal solid wastes and industrial organic wastes accounts for 17%; and wastewater treatment at sewage plants accounts for 8%. Advanced pretreatment technologies are being developed to enable the use of a larger variety of feedstocks in anaerobic digestion. Pretreatment is also necessary to maximize the potential for producing biomethane and biogas. It involves processes that are physical, biological, chemical, and mixed. With the help of these technological advancements, more materials, including straw, lignocellulose substrates, wood products, and others, will be able to be employed as feedstocks. The utilization of these materials is limited at present as they cannot be degraded easily.
In several nations, enhanced biogas can be added to the natural gas distribution system. The petrol does not need to be injected because it can be utilised locally, in combined heat and power (CHP) units, or converted to biomethane and used right away as a fuel for cars or to generate electricity. Developers considering grid injection must carefully examine the possible benefits on a project-by-project basis because the process of cleaning up biogas to enable grid injection entails a large investment in upgrading plant equipment and its operation.
The American Biogas Council estimates that there are more than 2,200 biogas production sites spread across the 50 states of the United States. On farms, there are 250 anaerobic digesters, 652 landfill gas projects, 1,269 water recovery facilities, and 66 autonomous food waste digestion systems. Since there are now more than 14,900 sites being developed in the United States, the market for biogas upgrading technologies has enormous growth potential in the nation over the course of the projected period.
According to the USDA, these new biogas facilities have the potential to produce 103 trillion kwh of electricity a year if they are used well. They might also contribute to a reduction in GHG emissions equal to taking 117 million cars off the road. There were over 163 biogas upgrading facilities operating in the United States in 2021. Many of these plants participate in injecting their upgraded biomethane product for use in vehicles into the gas grid.
Market Dynamics: Drivers
Growing Demand for Renewable and Low-Carbon Fuels
Globally, industrial, commercial, and residential end users are driving a boom in demand for low-carbon fuels as they seek to reduce their carbon footprints and achieve sustainability goals. By the year 2050, the European Union wants to have a successful, circular economy. The energy system of the EU will need to undergo considerable structural changes as a result. The first step in attaining the target of shifting to net-zero emissions by 2030 is a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 55%.
Market Dynamics: Challenges
Infrastructural Limitations in Developing Countries
One of the main obstacles to the overall biogas industry is the lack of adequate infrastructure. In many nations, the biogas upgrading sector is still in its infancy. The use of biogas vehicles is further complicated by the fact that many developing nations still have limited access to petrol stations and refueling infrastructure. This makes it much more difficult to develop biogas as a car fuel, which hampers demand growth. The insufficient supply of needed feedstock may also limit the production of biogas.
