Market Definition
A water purifier is a device that uses physical, chemical, and biological methods to remove undesirable chemicals and biological contaminants from untreated water in order to generate pure drinking water that is safe for consumption or industrial use. Point of use and point of entrance water purifiers are two different types of household water purifiers. The report’s scope includes tap water purifiers that can be put right at the point of use (POU).
Market Insights
The United States residential water purifiers market stood at more than $3 billion in 2022 and anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 5.89% during 2023-2030. The mature residential water purifier industry in the US has recently been under some pressure from shifting distribution channel dynamics and rising prices. In short, sales are still shifting from traditional retail to online sources and from specialized water treatment dealers to lower margin bargain retailers. Even while there is still some consolidation, there are a few significant new participants. As an illustration, A.O. Smith, a large maker of water heaters, entered the American market for water treatment goods after gaining experience in the area adjacent to its primary operations in China and India. (The business acquired Aquasana and Hague to accomplish this in the US.)
Because American consumers prefer not to have their kitchen counters any more cluttered than required, countertop units are not very common in the country. However, countertop items do offer a benefit for tenants because they don’t need professional installation or a landlord’s approval and are simple to move with the owner.
Sediment and carbon filters for the washbasin work nicely as well. Because full-size systems can usually fit in homes in North America, compact under-sink softeners are significantly less common in the U.S. market than in Europe. Although the rural market for water softeners has been saturated for decades and is essentially a replacement market, there is a trend towards smaller systems for use in apartments as the water softening industry increasingly targets urban customers (hence A.O. Smith’s acquisition of Hague and its line of Water Boss systems, for example). As could be predicted, homeowners with higher means and significant worries about the quality of their drinking water are more likely to choose installed water treatment systems.
As providers rush to offer features like freezing, carbonating, flavoring, and heating the water they dispense, the number of under sink water treatment systems controlled by and dispensing through multi-function designer faucets is projected to rise on the U.S. market. The U.S. market for well-water treatment systems and ion exchange POE softeners is nearly saturated and has always been dominated by replacement products. New housing construction and ownership changes account for the majority of new non-replacement purchases.
Market Dynamics: Drivers
Strong Export Market
Over the years, the US has emerged as the dominant water purifier market with highest production volume, in order to cater the domestic and international demand. Moreover, the concept of water filtration was initially implemented in the United States, thereby accounting for highest penetration of about 70% in comparison to other countries. The export market for water purifiers is anticipated to register double digit growth over the forecast period, on account of deteriorating water quality and declining per capita availability of drinking water. The importing countries lack in the production volume owing to high material cost and tariff barriers, thereby paving way for export from the United States.
Strong Growth in Housing Market
In 2021, the value of U.S. homes increased by a record $6.9 trillion, over twice as much as the previous greatest yearly gain of $3.7 trillion in 2005. The current value of the whole U.S. housing stock is $43.4 trillion. In 2021, the housing market in four states—Colorado ($1.2 trillion today), North Carolina ($1.1 trillion), Georgia ($1 trillion), and Arizona ($1 trillion)—passed the $1 trillion mark. There are now 14 states with house values over $1 trillion. The three states that expanded the most relative to the rest of the nation in 2021 were Florida, Texas, and Colorado.
