Market Definition
A seed is an unfinished plant embryo and food reserve encased in a seed coat, which is a kind of tough outer layer. The term “seed” is used more broadly to refer to anything that can be sowed, including seed and husk or tuber. After the embryo sac is fertilised by sperm from pollen, creating a zygote, the matured ovule produces seeds. The embryo inside a seed grows inside the mother plant to a particular size before growth is stopped. The embryo develops from the zygote, developing a seed coat around the ovule.
Market Insights
India’s expanding population, accessibility to fertile land, and diversity of agroclimatic zones are some of the major factors favorably affecting the industry. Additionally, the nation’s seed industry is expanding due to the commercialization of agriculture and active public-private sector cooperation. In addition, top seed breeders are increasingly utilizing cutting-edge digital technology to provide farmers with solutions to the challenges posed by pests, the environment, and other environmental factors. In turn, this is fueling market expansion.
Hybrid seeds are dominating the Indian market as farmers are embracing and using more hybrid seeds as a result of these seeds’ ability to resist pests, which lowers production costs and losses. Hybrids alone accounts for 60% of commercial seed cultivation acreage in 2022, compared to 40% of that in India for OPVs. As hybrid usage rises during the forecast period, it is therefore anticipated that the seed market would grow.
A positive market view is being provided by the combination of data science, artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, enhanced phenomics, and genomics in the agricultural sector. Additionally, the Government of India (GoI) is encouraging farmers and breeders by offering a number of chances, which is fostering an optimistic view for the market. It is also introducing a number of initiatives, like the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana and the Integrated Scheme for Oilseeds, Pulses, Oil Palm, and Maize (ISOPOM), which in turn are promising farmers and seed breeders ongoing support and attractive expansion chances. The Indian seed market is also anticipated to be driven by rising research institute spending in research and development (R&D) activities to improve crop productivity, supply chain management, and quality assurance.
Market Dynamics: Drivers
High Adoption of Biotech Crops
To safeguard natural resources, biotechnology is being employed to create more nutrient-dense and stress-resistant agricultural varieties. As a result, biotech crops have recently had the quickest rate of adoption. Beyond the major crops like maize, soybeans, cotton and canola, biotech crops have also been developed for additional crops like alfalfa, sugar beets, papaya, squash, eggplant, potatoes and apples. Additionally, rice, bananas, potatoes, wheat, chickpeas, pigeon peas, and mustard have all been the subject of biotech agricultural research by public sector organisations. These crops have a variety of nutritional and economically significant qualities that are advantageous to both food producers and consumers.
Market Dynamics: Challenges
Commercialization of Fake Hybrid Seeds and Counterfeit of Products
Illegal seed practises, such as those involving counterfeit seeds, false or deceptive labelling, infringement of intellectual property, and violations of regulations, have increased. The number of instances where counterfeit labels and seed bags have been sold in developing countries has increased over time. Low-income farmers’ inability to afford to buy significant amounts of seeds is a major factor in the issue. The vendors can now disassemble the bags, repack the lesser quantities, and sell them in loose form. Adulteration is now possible because of this.
