Market Definition
Water pump is a hydraulic machine used to raise, compress or transfer fluids. It is a mechanical device which imparts energy to a fluid and is primarily used for transportation of fluids. One of the most vital applications of water pump is in circulation of fluids. Water pumps find applications in almost all industries including residential and agriculture sectors. Centrifugal water pumps and positive displacement water pumps are the two major types of water pumps. Positive displacement pumps, often called as reciprocating pumps, use back and forth motion to pressurize fluids, while centrifugal pumps use centrifugal force to increase pressure and kinetic energy of the fluid.
Market Insights
Water pumps are used in many major industries such as wastewater treatment, oil & gas, food processing, chemicals and power. Centrifugal and positive displacement water pumps are the two major types of water pumps that are extensively used in the US. Demand for these water pumps is expected to grow in the coming years due to increasing demand from chemical industries for transportation of chemicals & water, water pumping in agricultural sector, and power and oil & gas sectors in processes such as hydraulic fracturing. The US water pumps market is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 7.45%, in value terms, during 2023-2030. Increasing government policies towards water reuse and water treatment would also drive the market for water pumps in the country.
Oil & gas sector is a major contributor to the US economy. Since the shale gas revolution, the production in of shale gas in the country has increased many folds. Water pumps are used in hydraulic fracturing, and this is the most used process for drilling wells in the US. According to Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), water is a major product in the US oil & gas industry. Value share of the oil and gas sector in the country’s water pumps market stood at 28.20% in 2020. According to ANL and US Federal Stats, for every barrel of crude oil produced, 7.5 barrels of water was extracted as wastewater in 2022 in the US. All these operations require water pumps for efficient pumping of fluids for extraction process and removal of wastewater produced during the process. Rising oil production in the country is expected to raise the demand for water pumps.
Southeast region generated the highest demand for water pumps in the US. Demand for water pumps is mainly generated by oil & gas, water treatment, agriculture and power industries. In terms of value, Southeast region held a share of 38.17% in the US water pumps market in 2022. Southeast region has highest number of natural gas power and process plants in the US. The region also has large number of plants for petroleum power, natural gas and water treatment as compared to other regions of the US. Moreover, the region has agricultural land and farms who are also a source of demand for water pumps.
Market Dynamics: Drivers
Huge Demand from Emerging Trends in the US Water Industry
Increasing water & wastewater treatment plants, rising mobile water services, annual groundwater extractions and hydraulic fracturing are catalysing demand for water pumps in the United States. Emerging need for water recycling and reuse in the country has led to installation and construction of several WWTPs to reduce dependence on groundwater resources. In addition, application of mobile water services in sea water desalination, water processing and reuse is more imminent across the power and municipal sectors in the US, and this is further anticipated to drive growth in the country’s water pumps market. The country’s hydraulic fracturing market is expected to witness significant growth over the coming years, owing to abundant availability of shale gas coupled with favourable initiatives by the US government to boost the hydrocarbon sector. Consequently, rising need for water pumps during injection and extraction of fluids, on the back of emerging trends in the US water industry is also steering growth in the US water pumps industry.
