The pseudocapacitor has a comparatively high energy density because of its special structure. Supercapacitors are useless for storing energy for a long time. Compared to lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors discharge energy far more quickly. Self-discharge might thus result in their losing up to 10%–20% of their charge each day. The voltage output of supercapacitors declines linearly with charge, in contrast to batteries, which produce essentially constant voltage output until they are completely exhausted. Supercapacitors are therefore unreliable for applications requiring constant energy delivery over a long time. This is a crucial limitation in situations where long-term energy storage is necessary, especially in energy applications where microgrid functionality depends on long-term storage.
